In simple terms, cross-border payment refers to the bonds generated by international trade between two or more countries or regions, which are then facilitated by certain payment methods and settlement tools to enable the transfer of funds across borders or regions. When domestic consumers purchase products from foreign websites through cross-border e-commerce, or when foreign consumers purchase products from domestic merchants, due to differences in currency and payment methods in different countries, certain payment means and payment systems and methods of settling funds are needed to enable the conversion of funds between countries and complete cross-border transactions.

The commonly used cross-border payment methods include bank wire transfer, professional remittance companies, and third-party payment. Of these, bank wire transfer has higher security but lower efficiency and is more expensive, so in many small transactions, third-party payment is often chosen. Third-party payment is not only convenient and fast, but also has lower fees.

Whether in domestic trade or cross-border transactions, consumers from placing an order to making a payment to receiving the goods and completing the transaction go through a series of activities, and the entire business process cannot be completed without the flow of funds, information flow, and logistics flow. In cross-border payment, however, due to differences in currency, the flow of funds is more cautious and complex. A complete cross-border payment process includes receipt of payment, receipt of funds, and foreign exchange settlement. In simple terms, when a consumer places an order and pays, the actual payment process has just begun.

To ensure the reliability and security of information and funds flow, the specific process is as follows: After the consumer places an order, the third-party payment institution will send the transaction information to the issuing bank or international card organization. After the transaction information is confirmed, the issuing bank or international card organization will issue the payment instruction and conduct the settlement of funds, and then transfer the money to the overseas account of the merchant. Next, the domestic third-party payment institution will conduct the settlement of cross-border e-commerce payment data and distribute the funds to the seller merchants.
